ADA Overview
The ADA requires that service animals be under the handler’s control at all times, typically using a harness, leash, or tether, unless using these devices would interfere with the animal’s work or the person’s disability. Service animals must be housebroken, and the handler is responsible for their care and supervision.
- Businesses may ask only two questions about a service animal.
- Is the animal a service animal required because of a disability?
- What work or task has the animal been trained to perform?
- No documentation or vest is required under federal law.
- Service animals must be under control and housebroken.
